After School Tutoring
We have a dedicated group of volunteers, led by ISU Instructional Assistant Professor, Sandra Graham, in partnership with the Livingston County Housing Authority.
These volunteers serve the students of our community by holding free tutoring classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school as well as transportation to and from the program as needed. NOTE: Everyone working with the students have had background checks and have completed Safe Sanctuary Training.
Students are not only able to get help with their homework in a safe environment, but develop a sense of their worth in Christ, solid working relationships with encouraging adults & older teens, laughter producing fun, reading and oral exercises.
During the time students are together they have access to computers, are guided to set attainable learning and character building goals, play games, and share a snack. They are rewarded for their hard work with a Field Trip at the end of the school year.
As part of a whole-person approach the Tutoring program provides some assistance with grooming, hygiene instruction and are given take-home items for their personal care.
Feedback from local Teachers & Administrators has been very positive and reports of great improvement has been seen in many of the attending students.
Please consider donating your time, food, monetary gifts or specific items of need.
Volunteers help local students through our Tutoring Ministry by emphasizing responsibility, encouragement and relationship, while helping the students improve their grades, provide access to school/hygiene supplies, healthy snacks, and sharing Bible stories with the kids.
Goals:
- Provide a safe place for K-8 kids to come after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays
to do homework and have fellowship. - Provide a healthy after-school snack and educate the kids about healthy eating choices.
- Treat the students who come to us for help with a respectful and caring attitude.
- Invite the students to participate in all the programs and opportunities offered through First United Methodist Church of Pontiac.
- Use Bible Stories, activities, fellowship, relationships and the Bible to educate and help the students grow in spiritual development.
Tutoring at Meadowview Court in Pontiac
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. for Grades 4-8.
We need volunteers – generous people who can give their time on these days to read with kids, help with homework, lead or help with crafts, play games, or help with clean-up.
Please keep our students and helpers in your prayers. Many of these kids face situations most of us never have to experience. It is amazing what a smile, someone who cares and a Bible story mean to these kids!!

Note: We adhere to our Safe Sanctuary Policy to insure a safe environment for the children, volunteers and leaders. If you join our team the training is mandatory, but we will help fit the teaching into a time that works with your schedule.
